FAQS
My child's recommended class level is the same as last season, does this mean he/she is not going to be advancing?
No. While your child may have been in Junior A last season and has been placed in Junior A for the upcoming season they will still be progressing. Each class is comprised of two levels. For example Junior A Jazz is learning both Junior 1 & Junior 2 A.D.A.P.T. exam levels. If a student attends twice per week and has good attendance, it takes a minimum of 2 years to complete the class curriculum. A student who attends once per week will most likely take 3 years to complete the curriculum. Both the students age and their skill level are considered when placing students in their classes.
My child has been taking a specific discipline and wants to add or switch to a different discipline in the upcoming season. What level would I register for? This depends on each individual student, the type of previous training, and their age. For students starting a new discipline in the fall, parents should speak directly with the director Ms. Jennifer to find out what classes would be most beneficial for their child.
One Class Per Week vs. Accelerated Program (A.P.)?
The studio recognizes that parents enrol their child in classes for a variety of reasons. Some students come only 1 time per week while other students come almost everyday. What you decide is based entirely on your child's interest, budget, and what you think they can do. As students get older and enter higher levels, the skills they are learning become more demanding on their physical fitness as well as artistry. To minimize the risk to injury and acquire the strength, flexibility, and muscle memory in order to achieve the required work of their class, the student needs to attend more than once per week.
My class level shows only an (A.P.) option, however I can only commit to training in 1 class per week?
Older students who cannot commit to training in two classes per week, may choose to take class only once per week, however they must take a class at a lower level. This is to lower the risk of injury as well as avoid holding up the progression of the class.
Why should I include Ballet in my studies?
We encourage all dancers who are studying other disciplines to enrich their training with a ballet class. Ballet teaches the dancers to understand their body and how to use their body properly to improve in all types of dance. Jazz dancers who do not train in ballet will be limited in their progression.
Do my child's classes qualify for children's fitness tax credit?
Yes. Your copy of your registration tuition receipt must be kept for your records. Visit the Canada Revenue Agency for more information.
What if my child does not want to continue classes after they start?
We have a one month policy to cancel classes up until October 31. All tuition fees (minus 1 month charge) will be refunded to you so there is no worry that you will be locked into your tuition fees for the full season if your child does not wish to continue.
Are there performance opportunities?
Yes. While most schools offer only one performance opportunity for all classes, our school offers two. The first is our "Winter Concert". This performance is inspired by the holiday spirit in December. Our final performance for all classes is our "Annual Gala Recital" at the Manitoba Theatre Center in June. For more details on performances, please visit our web site.
Are there workshop & competition opportunities?
Yes. If your child expresses the interest in doing more performing, consider joining our TROUPE PROGRAM. This program instils dedication, team work, professionalism, and it's allot of fun! Troupe members make life long friends! Auditions for our troupe programs are held during summer camps. For more information, contact the director.
What are my options if I want to learn "tricks" sooner in my dance training?
The majority of dance classes are technique based classes. It is very important to develop proper and strong fundamentals with "tricks" introduced slowly as the student progresses. Any dancer who is egger to spend more time learning "tricks" should enrol in Lyrical class. Since Lyrical students are also training in Ballet & Jazz, it leaves more time to introduce the student to "tricks" earlier in their training.
What additional expenses should I be aware of?
As with any other activity, there are expenses to factor. We are one of the only schools in Winnipeg to offer optional fundraising opportunities through our parent committee. All students performing at the "Gala Recital" will require a costume. Our "Gala Recital" is a professional performance opportunity and we love to have our student look like Stars! A $30 deposit is required to confirm your participation in November. Once all costume arrangements have been determined your child's teacher will notify you if your class is purchasing a costume or renting a costume from the studio. We are also one of the only schools in the city that offer a costume rental program! Additional costs may include... proper class attire, optional class photo packages, and recital tickets.
